The Danville City Council will be looking at adjusting the boarders of the city’s seven wards during tonight’s (Nov 1st) meeting. Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr points out that while the population of the state prison factors into the overall count of Danville’s population when the Census is taken, this is a matter of evening things up for Danville’s voting public; and the prison population is not eligible to vote.
AUDIO: We’re trying to make sure that we honor the principal of “one person, one vote.” Currently right now, for example, we have a 1,300 person difference from one ward to another. So essentially, people in that ward have less representation than the other wards. So what we’re trying to do is even it out, so that all of the wards are as even as possible. That way, everyone’s vote is counting the same; everyone has the same amount of representation.
The Danville City Council meeting is set for 6 PM.
