THE FOLLOWING IS A BILL PICKETT STORY
Some candidates spent the weekend trying to round-up last minute support as the countdown continues to Tuesday’s election. Vermilion County Clerk Kathy Jenkins is predicting a good voter turnout…
AUDIO: I’m hoping, keeping my fingers crossed, I could be lofty here, but I’m looking for about a 75% turnout.
Jenkins believes the economy – with its rising gas and grocery prices – is one thing bringing voters out. And she adds voters just want to make sure their voices are heard.
Danville Election Commission Executive Director Sandy Delhaye is also expecting a big turnout Tuesday, even though many people have already cast early votes. And if you are planning to vote at your polling place Tuesday, Delhaye has this advice.
AUDIO: I would say just go in, and be patient. If there is a line, it’s not going to do any good to get upset about it if you might have to wait a few minutes. But it’s our anticipation that because we have had a big turnout for vote by mail and early voting, that it’s possible those lines won’t be as long as we had originally anticipated.
Election judges who are manning the polling places Tuesday put in a long day. Vermilion County Clerk Kathy Jenkins notes they are at the polls from around 5:00 a.m. until well after the polls close at 7:00 p.m….
AUDIO: Granted, we do pay them for that. And they do get more than they used to get. But a lot of them do that because they’re just patriots. And they know that’s what makes this country special, that we all have an opportunity to vote, and they want to make sure everyone has an opportunity. And they’re very patriotic, and they want to put in they’re time to do that. And so I appreciate that very much. We couldn’t do it without them. And so they are definitely vital to the whole election process.
