Two new inductees have been named for Danville High School’s Wall of Fame. It was announced at the Danville School Board meeting tonight (Wednesday, November 13, 2019) that Doug Barnette and Mike Small will become the 57th and 58th persons to go on go on the DHS Wall of Fame.
Barnette is in sports marketing and business management, and is also a local philanthropist. Mike Small is a professional golfer and coach.
Small is a 1984 graduate of Danville High who was a member of the 1981 DHS state championship golf team. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1988, Small had a successful career in professional golf before returning to the U. of I. to become head coach of the Fighting Illini Golf team in 2000.
He was inducted into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame in October of 2013.
Barnett quickly rose to the top of the sports management business. His success has primarily been in motorsports with NASCAR and the IndyCar program. Since 1996 Barnett’s client list has grown to include NFL players, basketball coaches, race car drivers and Fortune 500 companies.
Prior to getting into sports management, Barnett says he spent his entire life around basketball. He toured with the world-famous Harlem Globe Trotters – not as a member of the Globetrotters – but rather as a member of their opposing team – the Washington Generals.
Barnett also served in the U.S. Army as an airborne medic in Central America and during Operation Desert Storm.
Because of his business success, Barnett has given back much to his community. Some of his philanthropic contributions have been public while others have been made privately.
Formal induction ceremonies for Small and Barnett will take place later this school year.
