The Danville City Council has approved a special use permit that will allow for a medicinal/adult-use cannabis dispensing facility along Lynch Road. Phoenix Farms of Illinois LLC says the business will not be open yet when a new law goes into effect on January 1st allowing the recreational use of limited amounts of cannabis in the state. The company’s goal is to open by February 1st in the building which formerly housed a Big Boy Restaurant and Border Café.
City Council members Brenda Brown and R. J. Davis voted against the approval of the special use permit. Alderwomen Sherry Pickering and Sharon McMahon were absent.
The owner of a nearby Danville motel spoke out at a meeting of the Danville Area Planning and Zoning Commission asking that the cannabis dispensary be moved away from the 8 motels located in that area. But the petitioners claim allowing the dispensary will increase business at the motels.
The Danville City Council also approved a zoning amendment requiring facilities for medicinal/adult-use cannabis sales to be at least a half-mile away from property zoned for residential purposes.
