Spring and summer are right around the corner, and that means severe weather season is coming. The Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency is having a special meeting this Thursday evening, with the goal of reducing damages caused by severe weather and other hazards. Vermilion County EMA Director Russell Rudd says this means looking back at major storms and incidents over the last quarter-century or so, and coming up with mitigation ideas, hoping to prevent damage ahead of time.
AUDIO: Building a safe room, as a mitigation effort against tornados or severe weather. Reinforcing roof systems and window systems to prevent them from being blown out during high wind events.
Rudd says in addition planning ahead to prevent wind damage, there’s also planning ahead to prevent water damage.
AUDIO: As far as flooding goes; maybe looking at properties that are repetitively flood damaged properties, and seeing about buying people out and just removing the property. Or elevating it, you know, so it doesn’t have damage during floods. Anything that would help prevent the loss of life and/or property.
Mayors and community leaders around Vermilion County have been invited to this meeting, and the public is also welcome to attend. It all begins at 6 PM Thursday evening, in the Vermilion County Board Chambers, on the second floor of the Joseph G Cannon County Administration Building at 201 North Vermilion.
