With word out that a vape shop is coming to 8 East Fairchild Street in Danville; just a hop, skip, and jump away from Danville High School; two different perspectives are being heard. After a special District 118 School Board meeting this past Friday (March 10th), Board president Dr. Randall Ashton says having these nearby is already an issue.
AUDIO: We have vape shops around here already that are within two blocks. I don’t like to see it right next to the school. Probably if I had to think one way or another, I would prefer it not to be there.
Danville Community Development Administrator Logan Cronk says what the city has to do here is follow state laws and regulations.
AUDIO: The state statute states, actually more specifically for vape shops, that they have to be outside of 100 feet away from the school. And then from zoning, there is no language that would prohibit a vape shop from being away from a school. Our code just follows that state statute when it comes to that.
Danville District 118 Assistant Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Yacobi expressed disappointment.
AUDIO: I just am blown away; in the fact that a vape shop in front of a high school is problematic.
That location on Fairchild previously was home to a Classy Critters pet grooming shop.
