State Senator Scott Bennett expects Illinois’ new law legalizing the recreational use of marijuana to continue to have growing pains. He notes some of the technology is still being worked out on enforcing it…
{‘’The field sobriety test – you’ll see people do the one-legged stand and all that stuff, walking the straight line – they’re different for marijuana. So you’ve got to get officers trained to do that,’’ said Senator Bennett. ‘’The breathalyzer people are familiar with DUI with alcohol, they’re just now developing the swab that goes inside your mouth that will test quantity in your system – not just the presence of marijuana in your system.’’}
The Senator and State Representative Mike Marron discussed the new law and other issues on WDAN Radio’s Newsmakers program Monday. Marron noted he opposed the bill legalizing limited use of marijuana….
{‘’Technology will, I’m sure, advance to accommodate what we need –what law enforcement needs – but those are things that will have to be worked out,’’ said Marron. ‘’And, of course, these were some of the issues that I raised. I was not supportive of the legalization, but I’m also a realist. And I’ve seen the public reaction to the legalization, and I understand that’s the world that we live in. We’re not going to turn back now,’’ added Marron.
Senator Bennett expects there will be action this summer on requests for a lot more marijuana dispensaries in the state.
