A Danville City Council committee is recommending the full council approve a bid for the demolition of the former Har-Wal Hotel downtown. The building at 101 West Harrison Street has been vacant for years and is now owned by the city. A resolution approved by the Public Works Committee of the Danville City Council tonight (Tuesday, March 10, 2020) notes the structure is dangerous and dilapidated.
The committee is recommending that a contract be awarded to Thomas Excavating to demolish the building for $58-thousand dollars. Community Development Block Grant funds would be used for the demolition.
Also during their meeting, members of the Public Works Committee also recommended the Farnsworth Group, Inc. be hired to develop engineering plans and specifications for improvements at the Hazel and Fairchild intersection near Danville High School.
Alderman Bob Iverson questioned whether the work is necessary. Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. replied ‘’yes’’. The Mayor noted there are issues at the intersection which affect both busses and pedestrians. He also noted the work will finish the Danville High School Campus Corridor project.
The Public Works Committee also approved resolutions recommending the city council appropriate funds to rehabilitate two small bridges on East Voorhees Street. One of the bridges is located just west of Lynch Road and the other is just east of Michigan. Both carry Voorhees traffic over Lick Creek. The cost of each bridge is a little over $1-million dollars, which each requiring a 20-percent local match.
