Some Vermilion County senior citizens are getting a helping hand in the form of free produce from Faith in Action’s Garden Share program. Seniors aged 55 and above are eligible to participate. On Wednesday seniors lined up at the Georgetown Township building where they were given items ranging from tomatoes, peppers and lettuce to pears and an apple-pear salad.
Lindsey Shamloo is a dietitian intern at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center. She was on hand explaining to seniors how they could use pears in different recipes.
Johnson Flanagan of Faith in Action says the program is providing nutrition for the seniors. He adds it depends on the generous donations of area residents to continue. Each Wednesday through September 27th the Garden Share program will be passing out free food to the seniors at the Georgetown Township building. It is located at 1805 North Main Street in Georgetown. Garden Share food is also distributed at the CRIS Healthy Aging Center each Wednesday.
Hours for the distribution are from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the Georgetown location and 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. at the CRIS Center in Danville.
Area residents can support the program by donating items out of your garden. You can drop off excess fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts and herbs Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. at 5:00 p.m. at the CRIS Healthy Aging Center at 309 North Franklin in Danville….or at the Georgetown Township building between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
