Danville’s Douglas Discovery Garden has a new addition – a brick plaza in the middle of the garden. Julie Schackmann, a member of the Douglas Discovery Garden Board, thinks the plaza makes a nice addition. ‘’It’s the start of pathways – four pathways that will lead you out of the garden. And we have an exposed center with dirt, and we eventually, probably this year will plant something there. But our goal is to put something really spectacular in the middle,’’ says Schackmann. ‘’So we have a great brick pathway, and many of the bricks are marked ‘Danville’, which is really cool,’’ she added.
And Schackmann says the plaza is just part of the improvements made this year at the site of the former Douglas Grade School. ‘’This has been a real banner year for us. Just lots of things happening, and a lot of people working really hard,’’ says Schackmann. ‘’(They’re spending) a lot of hours in the garden, keeping it weeded and watered, and looking beautiful, as you can see. And then, of course, the big brick project in the middle, and the irrigation and our partnerships – we’re growing. And hopefully we’ll continue to grow every year.’’
Schackmann adds they are still looking for suggestions for what to put in the middle of the plaza. An event next month will serve as a fund-raiser for the garden. It is the 3rd Annual Antiques in the Park and Garden. It is September 9th at Douglas Park and the Douglas Discovery Garden.
