The City of Danville is buying some property in the 900 block of North Vermilion Street to help spur economic development there. The City Council last evening (Tuesday) agreed to pay $185-thousand dollars for two properties owned by the estate of J.T. Gulick. And the City will pay $23-thousand dollars for a vacant piece of land directly south of the Gulick property. It is owned by Hook Superx, Incorporated.
Danville Mayor Scott Eisenhauer says there is interest in new development there. ‘’We know that there is a developer who is interested in those parcels along with an option that they have on another piece of property contiguous to that,’’ said the Mayor. ‘’And so the Council tonight took the bold step to purchase those properties so we can start working with the developer and start improving that corner of our community.’’
And the Mayor noted interest is also being shown in land on the northeast corner of Fairchild and Vermilion, where a gas station was previously located. ‘’We certainly believe that by developing the northwest corner (of Vermilion and Fairchild) – that is part of the properties that were purchased by the city council here tonight – we know that is also going to then elicit some excitement about the opportunities that exist on that northeast corner as well. So it’s great to see the work that is going on there – that is environmental assessment work that is taking place there. But we can certainly see – in the not too distant future – developers interested in that corner as well.’’
No information is being released yet on what the developer is proposing for the site where Gulick Illiana Medical Equipment and Supply was located. An earlier proposal to move a liquor store from South Gilbert to that site failed to materialize.
