Just in time for the Labor Day weekend new playground equipment is now in place at Ward Park in Ridge Farm.
That is just one of the places you can go to have fun this weekend.
Both Westville and Hoopeston are holding huge Labor Day weekend celebrations. And, of course, there will be parades in Hoopeston, Danville and Westville over the holiday weekend.
The Westville Lions Club sponsors the Westville Labor Day Celebration events, and St. Mary’s Church also has events it invites the public to participate in as part of the celebration.
One of the events in Westville is the Westville Tiger 5K Walk or Run, which starts at 8 o’clock Saturday morning at Judith Giacoma Elementary School. They’ve held the event in past years – but this is the first year that it’s a color run.
Some other events in Westville include:
- The 2nd Annual Farm to Table Dinner at 6:30 this evening (Friday)
- Inflatable games at Zamberletti Park
- The 4th Annual BBQ Cookoff on Saturday
- The 3rd Annual Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament at Zamberletti Park
- Country Music’s Murphy 500 at Zamberletti Park at 6 p.m.
- Bingo Extravaganza – all day Saturday, Sunday
- Fireworks at Westville High School on Sunday at 8:30 p.m.
- Foam party at Zamberletti Park for kids 12 and under from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 3rd….and for kids 13 to 18 from 8:00 until 10:00 p.m.
- The 107th Annual Westville Labor Day Parade is Monday, September 4th. It is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.
IN HOOPESTON:
- Gates open at 5:00 p.m. today (Friday, September 1st, 2017) and the Display Area and Midway open. There is a bracelet night special on the rides.
- There’s a Pro Rodeo in the Annex area starting at 7:30 p.m. and a Karaoke Contest in the Beer Garden starting at 11:00 p.m.
- The Grand Parade in Hoopeston begins at 10:30 on Saturday morning.
- Some other events on Saturday at the Hoopeston celebration include the Bill Orr 5K Memorial, an FFA Petting Zoo, a car show and at 6:30 p.m. the preliminaries begin for the Miss National Sweetheart competition in the Civic Center at Hoopeston’s McFerren Park. A Jo Dee Messina concert begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Annex in the park. And there is free sweetcorn from 1:30 until 5:00 p.m. Saturday.
- On Sunday, September 3rd, 2017 – activities include a children’s fishing derby, a National Sweetheart autograph session from noon until 1:30 p.m. at the Civic Center at Hoopeston’s McFeren Park, and a tribute to late Hoopeston Police Chief Mark Drollinger at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Doc Ashton and the Root Canals play from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. at the festival’s center stage. The National Sweetheart Pageant finals begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. And there are lots of other activities that day in Hoopeston including a demo derby. Carnival rides are also operating all weekend in Hoopeston’s celebration. And there is free sweetcorn from noon until 4:00 p.m. Sunday at McFerren Park. There will also be free sweetcorn at the park on Monday – Labor Day – from noon until 4:00 p.m. Some other attractions range from a pretty baby contest to a pie-eating contest. And those are just some of the things to enjoy at the National Sweetcorn Festival and Miss National Sweetheart Pageant. There are twenty-two young women vying for the title of Miss National Sweetheart this year.

IN CATLIN:
The Catlin Lions Club is hosting its 3rd Annual Fish Bash Street Festival on Saturday, September 2nd. The event includes food, an obstacle course, games and a dunk tank with VIPs participating.
Representative Chad Hays and the Boat Drink Caucus will entertain with live music from 7:00 until 10:00 p.m. The band will be performing next to a beer garden provided by Catlin American Legion Post 776 starting at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 2nd.
The Danville Labor Day Parade is scheduled to begin at 9:30 on Monday and the Westville’s 107th Labor Day Parade is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. Monday.
