A special fishing tournament, to raise money for the fight against ALS, is scheduled for 6 AM this coming Saturday morning in Lake Vermilion. Teresa Hathaway’s husband Phillip lost his battle with ALS this past November. Teresa says although some research has connected ALS to those with excessive exercise, such as athletes or those in the military; and of course an athlete, Lou Gehrig, is the name most often connected with ALS; there is still very little known about it. Some medications have been developed to extend one’s life after diagnosis; but the battle to learn more, and find a cure, continues.
AUDIO: There’s nothing out there, rhyme or reason, why somebody gets it and somebody doesn’t. Since the diagnosis a couple years ago, we were going to Mayo Clinic and doing all the support groups. Since then, they have found medications to extend your life, but there is no cure.
To do some fishing this Saturday to help this battle, stop by the Vermilion County Boat Dock; pay your entry fee, $25 per person; upon arrival, and all the proceeds from the annual Phil Hathaway ALS Fishing Tournament, goes to the ALS Association. Fishing will go from about 6 AM to 2 PM; but Saturday will be a hot day, so you’ll want to start early. Call organizer Tracy Fairchild with any questions at 217-304-0703.
