Preparation work is beginning for a mostly federally funded project designed to improve East Voorhees from Griffin Street to East of Michigan Avenue. This will be about a $750,000 project, qualifying for about $600,000 paid by federal funding. As Danville City Engineer Sam Cole explained after Tuesday’s Public Works Committee meeting, the main part will be done next year.
AUDIO: The project will consist of patching work, diamond grinding to smooth the surface out, crack sealing, and striping. Basically, what we’re approving is the design agreement; and we’re hoping to bid out the construction of improvements next summer.
Speaking of Griffin, the I-74 bridge going over it will be getting some improvements soon; with the Illinois Department of Transportation hopefully taking bids this year.
AUDIO: They’re going to improve it. We’re going to temporarily allow them to shut down Griffin Street to do the project; and then we will continue to do roadway maintenance work on Griffin Street when it’s done, like we are today.
Meanwhile, a sanitary sewer evaluation survey in the downtown area is about to get rolling. Cole says, it’s a matter of making sure they understand exactly what they have now, with eyes on the future. And cameras will be used.
AUDIO: By surveying we’re basically; we’re confirming that everything is the size and location we think it is. We’re televising them so that we know the condition on the inside of the pipes. They’re getting cleaned. And then also we’re doing smoke testing. So we’re looking for illegal connections. Are their downspouts hooked up? Are their storm drains hooked up?
Also talked about during Tuesday evening’s Public Works Committee meeting was some work at Harrison Park; working on stabilizing the slopes between Harrison Park Road and the river.
