Salvation Army Danville is getting closer to their 135th year celebration and Christmas in July fundraiser, set for Thursday July 27th at Woodbury Falls, off Hungry Hollow Road in Danville.
Salvation Army Danville Special Events and Development Coordinator Melissa Wilhelm recently joined Laura Williams on 1490 WDAN’s Community Connection program. She pointed out that although there was an increase of five percent last year in the local Christmastime Red Kettle campaign, the Salvation Army needs more that just that nowadays to cover its mission to serve.
AUDIO: And we love that campaign. The Red Kettle campaign is an awesome campaign. We want to encourage to continue contributing to kettles. But our needs have just outgrown that campaign. There’s no doubt about that.
Wilhelm says in addition to all that the Salvation Army does in providing shelter, utility assistance, food, and other help to area residents; it can also do more. And that’s a big part of the July 27th event; to hear from those helped by the Salvation Army, and to realize that other services could be added.
AUDIO: A lot of information is going to be flowing that evening. And I think people are going to leave, and feel uplifted. And they’re going to feel like they understand the Salvation Army a little bit better. And not just what we’re doing currently in Vermilion, but a list of what we COULD do. Some of the list of things being done in other counties that would be wonderful for Vermilion County.
Also on the program was Salvation Army Advisory Board Chair Brenda Brown. She pointed out a couple examples of the many organizations that the Salvation Army works with.
AUDIO: We also have intake for Toys4Tots in the Christmas season. We also have intake for the Fair Hope Ministries; which is a ministry located on East Voorhees Street, where they have clothing for children. Our work is fruitful. We are serving many. But yet, we have many to serve.
