The City of Danville is considering increasing the workload for the Vermilion County Land Bank. Danville Public Works Director Doug Ahrens says the city is considering using the Land Bank to market between 200 and 250 vacant lots currently owned by the city.
Ahrens says the City of Danville is considering an intergovernmental agreement with the Land Bank to attempt to get the property back on the tax rolls. Ahrens adds none of the lots have buildings on them…so they are ready for redevelopment.
Land banks are public or community-owned entities created to acquire, manage, maintain, and repurpose vacant, abandoned and foreclosed properties…according to the position statement of the Vermilion County Land Bank. The land bank can be thought of as a real estate investor acting in the public interest.
Members of the Danville City Council Public Works Committee are scheduled to discuss using the Land Bank for disposing of city-owned lots when the committee meets Tuesday evening (October 10, 2017). The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Robert E. Jones Municipal Building at 17 West Main.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting committee members are expected to continue their discussions of the proposed 2017 Tax Levy and Fiscal Year 2018-2019 Budget.
