Danville Area Community College president Dr. Stephen Nacco says Thursday’s (June 29th) decision by the United States Supreme Court striking down the use of affirmative action by colleges and universities in regard to admissions does not in any way affect how community colleges like DACC already operate, and will continue to operate.
AUDIO: For community colleges, it’s almost like us being able to say; “We have had open doors forever, since we were founded in 1901. And so, for community colleges, affirmative action is what we were founded to do. So there’s not a supreme court or any court that’s going to change the mission of the nation’s 1,200 community colleges.
Dr. Nacco says back when DACC was Danville Junior College, it was a different story.
AUDIO: I mean back in the junior college days they had admissions requirements; and they had, sometimes, the admissions tests; and they looked at transcripts. Our door is open for everybody.
Danville Junior College became Danville Area Community College in 1979.
