Police in Georgetown are labeling the death of a 21-year-old man a homicide, and they say a suspect is in custody. Georgetown Police Chief Whitney Renaker says the victim had been reported missing on Wednesday. But police add the missing persons report raised suspicions and officers later interviewed a person of interest in the case. That person ended up being arrested on unrelated charges on Wednesday.
Chief Renaker says the person in custody was interviewed again on Thursday and confessed to killing the 21-year-old. Chief Renaker says the suspect also told officers where they could find the body in the 200 block of West 15th Street in Georgetown. Officers…including Vermilion County Sheriff’s Investigators…went to that location where they found the body around 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon.
No names are being released at this time. Chief Renaker says both the victim and suspect are Georgetown residents. He says the suspect is formerly from Chicago. And the Chief adds the killing apparently occurred in the same area along West 15th Street where the body was recovered.
The Vermilion County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death along with Georgetown Police, Vermilion County Sheriff’s Investigators and an Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit.
