Vermilion County will officially be getting a new home for some county offices this week. County Board Chairman Mike Marron says the county will be accepting the deed on Friday (October 27th, 2017) for the former federal post office and federal court building at 201 North Vermilion Street in Danville. It was announced earlier that the county would be receiving the building.
The building was constructed in 1911 and was the Post Office for Danville until the General Services Administration Purchased it in 1988. It served as a federal courthouse for many years until those offices were moved to Urbana.
The building will become the new home for Vermilion County offices which are currently located in the Vermilion County Courthouse Annex. The County Board Office and meeting chambers, Supervisor of Assessments, County Treasurer, Recorder of Deeds and County Clerk’s offices from the Annex will relocate to the building at 201 North Vermilion. In addition, the Emergency Management Agency, Technical Services Department, and Danville City Election Commission will also move there.
Marron says no interruption of services is expected during the move. ‘’There are many people who remember the old Post Office and will now be able to visit it again and obtain needed services,’’ he noted. But the move of all of the offices is not expected to be completed for about a year.
Marron thanked those who have worked to make securing the building possible—including Congressman John Shimkus and the National Park Service.
