It is Halloween…and once again law enforcement agencies in our area are urging motorists to drive with extreme caution and to watch out for trick-or-treaters. In Danville, Public Safety Director Larry Thomason says trick-or-treat hours are from 5:00 until 8 o’clock this evening (Tuesday, October 31st, 2017).
Thomason says if you are going to be accepting children at your home for Halloween treats be sure you turn on your porch lights. Also make sure you have removed any items off of your sidewalk that might cause a child to trip.
Director Thomason says children should be told to look both ways before crossing a street and to use sidewalks where available.
Never cross the street from between parked cars, and respect the property of others (don’t bother displays).
Thomason adds children should only visit homes in their own neighborhood. He suggests children travel with three or four others in their age group. And never eat any treats until you get home and your parents have had a chance to check them. You should also not eat unpackaged items or items that have a wrapper open. Instead, Director Thomason says throw those items away.
And if you do find something wrong with treats, report it to the police.
Some other safety tips from the Danville Department of Public Safety:
- Avoid loose clothing that you might trip on;
- Make sure your shoes fit properly;
- Avoid masks that might reduce your vision. Instead, you make-up which is safer;
- Avoid dark colored costumes and clothing. And if you are wearing a dark-colored costume, put reflective tape on it so motorists can see you;
- Be careful around open flames – such as those in jack-o-lanterns;
- Keep costumed children away from pets.
- Greet children at your door but do not ask them to come inside your home;
- Make sure you know who your children are with, and that proper supervision is provided;
- And finally, limit your trick-or-treat rounds to just tonight (October 31st).
