[UPDATE: Westville Police late Wednesday released updated information regarding this story correcting the ages of the children who were struck as being a 7-year-old male and 12-year-old female. Police had earlier said it was a 9-year-old and a 3-year-old. See the updated story on this website.]
Westville Police say a 9-year-old child was reported in critical but stable condition today (Wednesday) after being struck by a car Tuesday evening. Police Chief David Booe says a 3-year-old who was also struck by the car escaped serious injuries. Police have not released the names of the children or the driver of the car involved, but Booe says the children both live nearby in Westville.
Chief Booe says the 9-year-old was possibly going to be transferred from an Urbana hospital to one in Peoria to undergo surgery. Police say the children were struck by the southbound car on North State Street (which is Illinois route one) near East Williams Street. There is a traffic signal at that intersection and police believe the children were headed to a trunk-or-treat event at nearby Zamberletti Park.
There have been no tickets issued as the investigation into the incident continues.
As police were handling that call, a collision between a truck and an SUV just a block away sent five members of a Georgetown family to the hospital. Chief Booe says it occurred as traffic was being diverted around the earlier accident involving the two pedestrians who were struck. Westville Police say a truck traveling down an alley failed to yield to an SUV and struck it broadside. The woman who was driving the SUV and her four children were transported to Presence United Samaritans Medical Center, but police say all were released following treatment.
