This is the weekend for Danville Light Opera’s annual summer teen show. But as Laura Williams found out on 1490 WDAN’s Community Connection program, this production of Anything Goes has developed into something more than just a show put on by teens.
First, there’s all the dancing; specifically, tap dancing. DLO’s Kady Richey says this has been new for many of them, and they’ve picked it up well.
AUDIO: It’s been really fun this summer to take on that role of choreographing the dances but also teaching them a new style of dance. That’s been super fun.
Amanda Brown talked about her role as Reno Sweeney.
AUDIO: She is a nightclub singer, ex-evangelist; and she’s just this big, bold character and she just exudes confidence. I love that.
Playing Sir Evelyn Oakleigh is Dayo White, who says the cast teamwork has been remarkable.
AUDIO: All the cast members spend time talking to each other, trying to communicate. “Hey, how should we do this. Hey, can you come with me so we can work on this?”
Director Jordan Richey says once they realized what was happening, the message to the cast was, “This is much more than just a show by students.”
AUDIO: This is not a teen show. Because what we’re seeing is rivaling everything that we see; from a main stage performance, to any other community performance that is out there.
DLO’s Anything Goes at the DHS Dick Van Dyke Auditorium will be July 28th through July 30th; Friday evening at 7:30, Saturday evening at 7:30, and Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Tickets are 15 dollars for adults and five dollars for students. You can get these general admission tickets at the door, or ahead of time at dlomusicaltheatre.com.
