Danville City Council members are continuing discussions on ways to pay-off a projected $105-million dollar deficit in the police and fire pension funds by the year 2040. Aldermen discussed several options during a meeting last night (Tuesday, November 7th, 2017) after listening to a report from an actuary.
Mayor Scott Eisenhauer has proposed growing revenue by raising property taxes and increasing the city’s Public Safety Fee over twenty years to pay the debt…
Alderman Jon Cooper asked about possibly implementing a utility tax, but the Mayor says the most that could be raised using such a tax is $3-million dollars. The Mayor also said future city councils could decide whether to add some other source of revenue. Alderman Rickey Williams Jr. noted it is a problem the current city council inherited and did not create. Williams also noted that while some cuts have been made by the City in past years, he feels more could be made.
The Mayor says he would like to have the new proposed budget and tax levy ready to be placed on public display at the council’s next meeting on November 21st.
