A Danville man has been sentenced to twenty years in prison after pleading guilty Wednesday to second-degree murder charges. Circuit Judge Nancy Fahey handed down the sentence on 20-year-old Dallaz Camareno in connection with the shooting death of a teenager in a 2016 shooting at Garfield Park.
The victim, 16-year-old Devon McClyde had been playing basketball at the park and was shot while walking away from the court. Police say McClyde was hit during an apparent exchange of gunfire by members of two separate gangs. When police arrived they found a large group of young people running from the park. Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason says police received reports that several females had been arguing near the area where the shots were heard.
The shooting brought a call to stop the violence. Pastor Thomas Miller of the New Life Church of Faith in Danville led the effort. ‘’We’ve got to create some kind of process of eliminating the illegal guns that are killing our young people,’’ said Pastor Miller at the time.
Camareno had originally been charged with first-degree murder and mob action.
