Remember some of the times when roads have been covered with snow? Or ice has made traveling treacherous? Although we have not had to deal with that lately, this is mid-November. And Illinois State Trooper Tracy Lillard says now is the time you should be preparing for the winter weather coming in the weeks and months ahead.
Although temperatures have been climbing well above freezing…this is Winter Weather Preparedness Week. And Trooper Lillard says motorists should prepare for severe winter weather before it arrives. And once wintry conditions are forecast, Lillard says you should keep abreast of the forecast…
Trooper Lillard also recommends having a winter survival kit in your vehicle…
Jugs of water (in insulated containers so it won’t freeze), extra clothing, dry snow boots, sand or kitty litter, a shovel, and booster cables are some other things recommended for your winter survival kit. A metal can and some matches (to melt snow if necessary), along with some extra windshield washer fluid are other items recommended for the kit.
And if you do happen to end up in a ditch along the highway during severe weather, Trooper Lillard notes it may be awhile before a trooper gets there to help you…
Trooper Lillard added that often it is motorists who are traveling too fast for conditions that gets them into trouble.
