Students will be back in school for the 2023-2024 school year starting Friday (August 11th). Danville Police Chief Christopher Yates is reminding everyone to get back into “school mode” while driving in the morning. That means being ready for more traffic, allowing for extra time; and more than anything being careful with all the children and young drivers out and about. Phone calls and texts can wait, especially when the future and lives of all the students are on the line.
AUDIO: Keep in mind that our children and our students are our most valuable commodity. Just please, take a time out, put the cell phones down, and wait to answer the text. Pay attention to the roads, and know that there’s going to be a little bit more traffic, and many of the people driving those vehicles are going to be young drivers. Look out for them, look out for yourself; and make sure everybody gets to and from school safely.
And as for safety while at school, the Danville District 118 School Board on Wednesday (Aug 9th) evening approved an additional resource officer for the district; this one scheduled to be assigned to South View Upper Elementary School.
A resource officer from the Danville Police Department will be assigned to South View Upper Elementary at some time during the new school year.
This will be in addition to the current three District 118 resource officers. One is assigned to North Ridge Middle School, one to Danville High School, and then one that splits time between DHS and Kenneth D. Bailey Academy. Chief Yates says the department will now begin preparations as far as arranging, assigning, funding, and training for the new position at South View.
