The 19th Annual Frostbite Marathon is set for Friday and Saturday – December 1st and 2nd. The event helps stock the shelves of the Danville Area Food Pantry. ‘’The need for food in our community continues to increase,’’ says Chuck Brooks, the Food Pantry Chairman. He says just last month the Danville Area Food Pantry served over 800 people, ‘’with 70 of those being first-time users of the pantry.’’
During the Frostbite Marathon area residents can drop-off donations of non-perishable food items at the Pepsi truck at the County Market Store located in Towne Centre. Donations may also be placed in a collection barrel at the County Market Stores at the Village Mall and in Tilton. All of the food collected is used to help those in need in the Danville area.
The Frostbite Marathon Food Drive is sponsored by County Market along with WDNL D-102 and 94.9 K-Rock Radio.
‘’We continue to see an increase in the number of seniors using the pantry as well as more and more people becoming unemployed or underemployed,’’ said Brooks. ‘’Because of the increased need at the Food Pantry, we are within a few weeks of closing our doors. This food drive will help re-stock the pantry,’’ added Brooks.
Items will be collected at the Pepsi truck parked at the County Market Store at Towne Centre from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday (December 1st and 2nd).
All three of the County Market Stores will have red tags on items on their shelves indicating items that are used at the Food Pantry every day. In addition, shoppers will have the option of purchasing a bag for $5-dollars each containing items used at the pantry.
The Danville Area Food Pantry is the oldest emergency food pantry in Vermilion County, serving the county for over 35 years. The pantry is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m. at 141 North Walnut Street in Danville.
