The National Weather Service has issued an ‘Excessive Heat Warning’ for our area because of very hot weather that is expected next week. Officially the “Warning’ runs from 1:00 p.m. Sunday, August 20th, until 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 24th.
Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 are expected next week. Temperatures are expected to climb into the low to mid 90s, and on Thursday could reach near 100 degrees.
The extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, especially for those working or participating in other outdoor activities.
A message from the National Weather Service reminds citizens to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned areas when possible, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing will also help you stay cool. And remember that children and pets should never be left in unattended vehicles under any circumstances.
To reduce the risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends taking frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
Heat Index readings could reach as high as 110 to 115 at times during the week. The Heat Index is how hot it feels when you factor the temperature with the humidity level.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. And remember that heat stroke is a true emergency. Call 9-1-1.
