The Danville Salvation Army has struck gold in this year’s Christmas Kettle Campaign! Lt. John Woodard of the Salvation Army says a gold Krugerrand was found wrapped in a $10 bill while money was being counted. He says some unknown person dropped the coin in the kettle outside the County Market Store at Danville’s Village Mall Shopping Center.
‘’We didn’t expect it to be this early,’’ said Lt. Woodard, but he added ‘’we’re happy about it!’’ The 1982 Krugerrand is believed to be worth around $1,300.
The Danville Salvation Army has had a string of years where someone has tossed one of the gold coins into a kettle. Lt. Woodard says it certainly boosts the feelings of the volunteers who are manning those kettles. The Salvation Army hopes to raise $100-thousand dollars in the Danville area by the time Christmas arrives.
One way businesses can help is by sponsoring a kettle. The Salvation Army is trying something new this year where for a minimum $100 donation they will place a sign or logo on a kettle stand. Lt. Woodard says it shows the public that business is supporting the campaign.
