The cooler weather will be hitting Saturday (Aug 26th) just in time for the Sparky Songer Memorial Ride, with the American Legion Post 210 Riders departing from the Vermilion County War Museum at 12 Noon. Registration runs 10 AM to Noon, and all proceeds are going to the War Museum. As the museum’s Larry Weatherford reminds us, Sparky Songer was a special man, and a special Veteran.
AUDIO: Sparky through the years had done a lot for Veterans, not just through the museum; but he worked with the organizations that would help Veterans get scholarships to go to college. (He would) help them get from the Army life or Marine life, or whatever area they were in, he would help those folks get adapted into civilian life. So when he passed away several years ago; the American Legion Post, he had been a member there for many years, decided to honor him.
The vehicles participating in Saturday’s ride will pass through Paris, Cayuga, Attica, Hoopeston; and finally to Post 210 for the post ride meal. The Vermilion County War Museum is usually open 10 to 4 on Saturdays, but Weatherford says anyone who wants to come early Saturday morning is welcome. They’re planning to have coffee and donuts for the riders starting around 8 AM.
