Members of a Danville City Council committee discussed salaries last night (Tuesday) for the city leaders who will be elected next spring. Alderman Jon Cooper said he will not support any type of increase for the aldermen. ‘’We’re not in it for the money,’’ added Cooper.
Alderman Mike O’Kane says he believes there should be some sort of incremental raises for aldermen, the city treasurer and mayor. And, referring to the mayor’s salary, O’Kane added ‘’it doesn’t seem right somebody making $72,000 is overseeing people making over $100,000.’’
Cooper says he wants a job description for a part-time mayor before he would agree on how much that person should be paid (if a government change is approved in November).
Alderwoman Sharon Pickering says she will outline her proposal on the salaries later. Committee chairman Mike Puhr noted the council has basically two months to get the new salary package in place. But he added he would like to have it in place in October.
