Danville City Council members are moving closer to a decision on whether the city will accept a federal grant to go toward hiring six new firefighters. Mayor Scott Eisenhauer outlines the key figures involving the grant….
Danville Firefighters Local 429 has said the city would save over $600-thousand dollars in overtime costs per year over three years. But Mayor Eisenhauer says some council members wonder whether the savings would really occur…
Firefighters Local 429 says the savings would come from the $600-thousand dollars which is currently budgeted for overtime. The Firefighters Local notes six new firefighters equals 15 firefighters per shift. And the union says that means all earned leave time is covered with on-duty personnel. The Firefighters say with already reduced manning requirements, overtime is greatly reduced. And the union adds that with 15 firefighters per shift the estimated overtime cost is $100-thousand dollars.
Members of the Public Services Committee of the Danville City Council are scheduled to continue the discussion on the grant when it meets Tuesday evening. The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Robert E. Jones Municipal Building at 17 West Main Street.
