Proposed salaries for the Danville City officials who will be elected next spring are headed to the full city council for review. The Public Services Committee is recommending raising the full-time mayor’s salary from $73,000 to $75,000 – then keeping it at that rate over the next four years.
The committee is recommending setting the salary for a part-time mayor at $10-thousand dollars. But the figures are subject to change when the full city council acts on the package later.
City council members on the committee are still wondering what the duties would be for a part time mayor if the change in government being proposed is approved.
Mayor Scott Eisenhauer told the committee that if the vote is approved, all executive authority would belong to the city manager. All legislative authority would belong to the city council.
Committee chairman Steve Nichols says it seems to him as though the cart is before the horse. He noted the committee is being forced to set the salaries before job descriptions are developed. Alderman Jon Cooper had earlier asked for a job description for a part time mayor in case the vote to change Danville’s form of government is approved in November.
Alderman Steve Foster said the discussion on salaries is a precursor to the confusion involved in the proposal to change Danville’s form of government.
