Vermilion County voters are being warned about some phone calls that may be trying to access your personal information. County Clerk Cathy Jenkins says her office has received reports of phone calls impersonating an organization that provides voter registration assistance and mentions her office and her name. The callers ask whether the person who answers the phone whether they want to register to vote or request an absentee ballot.
Jenkins says her office NEVER uses phone solicitations, nor will the office asking you to register to vote. And Jenkins is concerned the calls could raise voter confusion on Election Day if people who are called provide information and then think they have registered to vote. Jenkins is asking anyone who receives such a call to call her office immediately.
Voter registration requires residents to provide significant personal information and Jenkins warns you should never give that information over the phone to someone who attempts to register you to vote. She says if the information is provided to the caller it could be used to attempt fraudulent voter registration or could possibly be used for financially-motivated identity theft.
