Plans for some major improvements at some Vermilion County government buildings are continuing to advance. The Finance Committee of the County Board is recommending the full board enter into an agreement with a consultant to guide the projects. Committee Chairman Steve Miller explains…
{Audio: “This group is going to essentially obtain bids for the work to be done, from as many local contractors as possible. And then bring that information back to the county board for its review, and for review by our architect. And then we will decide which parts of the project we think are affordable, and which will be a good investment of the county’s money.’’}

Miller outlined the work that is being considered….
{Audio: “Well we have a good number of heat pumps that need replaced in the county courthouse. We have windows in both the Cannon Building and the county courthouse. We have lighting projects in the four buildings that are involved – which are not only the Cannon Building and courthouse, but the health department building and EMA building.”}
Solar panels are also being considered at the county health department building to reduce energy costs.
In addition, Miller says there are some control systems that need to be upgraded at the Rita B. Garman Vermilion County Courthouse. The estimated cost of all the work is just under $5-million dollars. The county earlier set-aside federal funding it received from the American Rescue Plan Act for Covid relief to pay for the work.
The full Vermilion County Board meets February 13th and is expected to vote on resolutions to allow the consultant to proceed with getting bids.
