Danville City Council members fell one vote short of passing a proposed new tax levy Tuesday evening. So now the council is faced with reaching an agreement at its next meeting on December 18th.
Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. had proposed a 4.98 percent hike in real estate taxes next year. Alderman Dan Duncheon had proposed raising the dollar amount generated by the levy by $175-thousand dollars – but that proposal also failed.
Although efforts to pass the new tax levy fell short, acting mayor Rickey Williams Jr. says he is not discouraged…
Vermilion County Supervisor of Assessments Mathew Long attended the meeting and delivered some good news. He said the EAV – equalized assessed value – for property in Danville is expected to be higher….
Long thinks the local economy is showing signs of improvement…
Alderman Steve Nichols wants to reduce the amount of money going to the police and fire pension funds to give taxpayers a break. Alderman Steve Foster says it doesn’t make sense that the city is continuing to make payments into the pension funds but the balance owed continues to grow.
