Sunday, May 19th Incident:
At approximately 9:16 PM on Sunday, May 19, 2024, Danville Fire Fighters were notified of a residence on fire in the 1800 block of Griggs St. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered smoke and flames coming from the northwest corner of the second story of the home. Individuals on the scene advised firefighters that no one was inside the residence.
First arriving firefighters immediately began extinguishing the fire and soon went to work searching the structure to assure that no one was left inside. There were reports of pets inside the structure. A crew of firefighters from Engine 2 was able to locate a dog and helped to bring it to safety. Later in the incident, a cat escaped the structure under its own power.
Both pets appeared to be unharmed. Firefighting efforts were complicated due to the fire being located within an area that was difficult to access. Due to the heat, this required multiple crews to take turns working inside the structure to remove portions of the walls and ceilings to locate the concealed fire. Due to the amount of smoke, an aerial device was placed into operation, and a hole was made in the roof to allow the smoke and fire to vent. Crews
were able to locate the fire in the concealed attic space and extinguish it within an hour. Crews remained on the scene for an additional 3 hours to ensure that the fire was out and to perform an investigation.
Two firefighters suffered heat related illness at the scene of the incident. One firefighter was treated and returned to work, a second was treated and returned to quarters. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time.
