Danville High School’s choir could decline its invitation to take part in a nationwide event at the Lincoln Memorial next year.
Choir Director Jeff Thomas told District 118 school board members on Wednesday night that other options could be considered such as trips to Chicago or St. Louis. He says that major fundraising events such as the Midwest Classic could not be held this year, and he is not sure whether the Classic could even take place next year.
Board members Lon Henderson and Shannon Schroeder both said they have received several phone calls from parents who are concerned about their students being able to afford the trip, especially since the Danville High School band is planning on going to Disney World next spring.
Band Director Ryan Krapf says that the band students have switched to fundraising models that have large profit margins but are actually practical, such as a recent fundraiser selling plants from Danville Gardens. He says that more than half of the students already have the trip paid for.
The high school choir was chosen back in February to attend the centennial celebration of the Lincoln Memorial after its members took part in a television show on PBS.
