A Memorial Day Weekend tradition returns this month when Rotary Memorial Way lines North Vermilion Street in Danville with hundreds of small American flags. The Danville Rotary Club has sponsored the event for over fifteen years.
Also returning this year are the small cards under each flag describing who each flag honors. Last year the Danville Rotary Club decided not to have sponsors for the flags due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But the flags were still placed along Vermilion and around war memorials and the Vermilion County War Museum.
It is not too late to honor someone by sponsoring flags this year. Anyone can sponsor a flag for $5 each. The card can note a branch of the military and any awards they received (such as the Purple Heart, Silver Star, or others). While most flags honor those who served, or are currently serving in America’s Armed Forces, anyone can be recognized.
Proceeds from the event go to support the Vermilion County War Museum, Veterans at the V.A. Illiana Health Care System, and community projects of the Danville Rotary Club. The Rotary Club serves the area with the motto ‘Service Above Self’.
