A Memorial Day Weekend tradition is continuing in Danville with Rotary Memorial Way along North Vermilion Street. Teams of Rotary members have placed hundreds of flags along the route.
Emily Duncan, president of the Danville Noon Rotary Club, says the flags cover a wide area…
{AUDIO: “This goes all the way from English Street down North Vermilion to Kohl’s in the Wal-Mart area.”}
Duncan explained that each flag has a sponsor….
Audio Player{AUDIO: “We sell corporate sponsorships, so businesses can sponsor the project as a whole, or you buy flags individually for five dollars apiece.” Bill Pickett then asks Duncan: “And what about the money – where does it go?” Duncan replies: “It goes to organizations in the Vermilion County area that support veterans. So, a lot of our funds go to the Vermilion County War Museum. We always make sure that a large portion of our proceeds go to the War Museum because they help us with the flags as well.”}
Duncan (second from left) was with a group of other women placing flags along North Vermilion when she was asked by Bill Pickett how she feels about the project….
{AUDIO: “I love this project. It’s one of my favorite projects that the Danville Noon Rotary Club does. And just honoring our veterans and those that served our country is so important. Rotary’s motto is ‘Service Above Self’, and so I think that honoring those that served our country is just a small gesture that we can show those people.”}
In addition to placing hundreds of small American Flags along Vermilion Street, others were placed at local war memorials and the Vermilion County War Museum.
