Motorists traveling along North Vermilion Street in Danville are seeing thousands of small American Flags this weekend. They represent the 27th year for the Danville Rotary Memorial Way project. Rick Rotramel is a member of the Rotary committee that put out the flags….
{AUDIO: “It expanded about 2015 so where we go from English (Street) to Wal Mart. We used to go from English to about McDonald’s. And we expanded it to corporate sponsors. So, people could sponsor 20, even 100 flags if you want to at $5 apiece.”}
Each flag contains a tag honoring those who served or are currently serving in America’s Armed Forces. Many of the tags also remember loved ones who have died.
Rotramel says sales for flag sponsorships have recently climbed sharply…
{AUDIO: “When we’re selling sponsors for our flags, when it gets to the last two weeks it’s just overwhelming – the response we get. And we tripled the amount of flags that we had sponsored in the last two weeks. So that would have been the first two weeks of May. I think people love seeing the flags out here on the weekend.”}

Danville’s Rotary Club is active in several local projects…including helping keep areas along Gilbert Street clean….
{AUDIO: “And we provide scholarships from this project. (We) sponsor two Sparky Songer Scholarships out at DACC. And we do various things – we have Rotary Point out at Kennekuk County Park, where last year – I think it’s from this project – we put a new grill in.”}
This year there are 3-thousand flags along Rotary Memorial Way.
