A new Law Enforcement Crisis Worker will work at the Public Safety Building in Danville with the Danville Police Department regarding citizen mental health and other situations.
DANVILLE — Danville Police Chief Chris Yates says often times law enforcement handles different situations beyond the criminal element. There may be a criminal element involved, but that can be a result, not a cause in a situation, and someone may need behavioral health support.
That’s the idea behind a partnership for the new law enforcement crisis worker (LECW) position the Danville City Council approved this week.
The partnership between the city and Crosspoint Human Services is to “enhance community safety and well-being by connecting individuals and families to appropriate behavioral health, social service and community resources while reducing unnecessary involvement with law enforcement, emergency services, hospitalization and the criminal justice system,” according to the resolution.
“Crosspoint is excited to partner with the Danville Police Department in creating a dedicated Law Enforcement Crisis Worker position. This is an important step forward in strengthening the response to the needs of the community and ensuring individuals experiencing a crisis receive the most appropriate support with minimal delay,” stated Crosspoint Human Services Chief Executive Officer Lisa Rhodes.
