People v. Michael Winters 2026-CF-122
On July 27, 2026, Michael Winters (DOB: 9/25/1990), formerly of Danville, Illinois, pleaded guilty to Burglary, a class 2 felony, and was sentenced to 6 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Following his term of imprisonment, Winters will serve 12 months mandatory supervised release. The plea and sentencing were presided over by Judge Mark S. Goodwin.
The People presented evidence that on February 26, 2026, Danville Police responded to a residence on South Kimball Street for a reported burglary. The victims advised that they were the executors of the estate of their deceased uncle. They stated they had received information that an
unknown male had been seen going in and out of the property. While traveling to check the property, they observed a man pushing a cart away from the residence carrying a cabinet speaker which they recognized from inside the home. When they arrived at the home, the victims noticedthe back door was open and numerous items were missing from inside. After receiving the description of the suspect and the property, another officer located the suspect and the cabinet speaker at a residence on North Collett Street. The suspect, identified as Michael Winters, gave inconsistent stories about how he was given permission to be on the property, initially claiming the deceased was his grandfather, and later claiming he had been in a relationship with the deceased. During the investigation, officers recovered many of the items reported missing from the home in the suspect’s possession.
State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy thanked the Danville Police Department for their quick response to apprehend this defendant. Lacy added, “This prison sentence holds the defendant accountable for his actions and sends a clear message that crimes against our community carry serious consequences. My office remains committed to working alongside law enforcement to protect the safety of the good People of Vermilion County.”
