ABOVE: Danville Area Community College will host a Founders’ Day celebration on Wednesday.
DANVILLE — A free lunch on the quad for students, a bench dedication honoring a longtime educator and an evening celebration with additional honorees are all part of Danville Area Community College’s Founders’ Day event on Wednesday marking the college’s 80 years.
DACC started as a junior college under Danville public schools in 1949 after initially being established as an extension center of the University of Illinois in 1946. It was named Danville Junior College in 1951.
In 1966, the college became an independent two-year area college with its own board of trustees and junior college district. The name Danville Junior College was changed to Danville Area Community College in 1979.
A bench dedication outside the Bremer Conference Center will occur at 3:30 p.m. for Martha Kay, who died last year and had served as Liberal Arts faculty and division dean.
The business of the college also continues next week, as the DACC board will have a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday to act on new faculty union contract that expired in July. The board prior in closed session is expected to discuss the collective bargaining matters, evaluation of Fletcher and other items.
