ABOVE: Former Danville Area Community College Instructor Missy Gouty speaks of the lady who first hired her to teach at DACC in 1991, Martha Kay.
In the Wednesday (Sept 16) afternoon heat on the Danville Area Community College campus, a special dedication occurred outside the DACC Bremer Center. A bench, in memory of long time DACC instructor Martha Kay was dedicated right in front of a tree that was previously planted in her memory.

On the bench is the Shakespeare quote, “O this learning, what a thing it is.” Martha Rose Kay lived from 1938 to 2025. Her time at DACC included being Head of Liberal Arts, being Dean of the English Department; and as DACC’s own Missy Gouty, who spoke at the commemoration, reminded us; Martha Kay also spent so much time being a role model.

AUDIO: I was a Martha fan. She hired me in 1991, and became my mentor and good friend. And I learned so much from her. So being able to pay her tribute was a true honor. And I’m so glad we could just celebrate what she did for this college.
Wednesday afternoon’s ceremony took place prior to the start of DACC’s Founders Day 80th Anniversary celebration inside the Bremer Center.
