THE FOLLOWING IS AN INDIANA STATE POLICE RELEASE
Pulaski County – Detectives from the Indiana State Police Lafayette Post are investigating a pursuit that ended with a shooting in Winamac.
A preliminary investigation indicated that just before 1:30 p.m., a Monon Police officer was en route to a disturbance at the VanGuard facility in Monon. While responding to the disturbance, the officer observed a Chevrolet Colorado believed to have been involved and attempted to stop the vehicle in Monon. The Colorado failed to stop and fled eastbound on State Road 16.
The pursuit continued eastbound on State Road 16 before traveling northbound on State Road 39 and into Pulaski County. The pursuit then continued eastbound on State Road 14, where law enforcement deployed a tire deflation device. The Colorado struck the device, but the pursuit continued on State Road 14 into Winamac.
The pursuit eventually came to a stop near the intersection of Monticello Street and 15th Street. The driver exited the Colorado while armed with a firearm. During the ensuing encounter, the driver is believed to have discharged the firearm, and an officer on scene is also believed to have discharged their department firearm.
The driver was transported to an area hospital, where they were later pronounced deceased.
The driver’s identity will be released by the Pulaski County Coroner’s Office, along with the coroner’s determination regarding the cause and manner of death.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation being conducted by detectives from the Indiana State Police Lafayette Post. There is no further information available for release at this time.
The Indiana State Police was assisted at the scene by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, Monon Police Department, Winamac Police Department, Pulaski County Coroner’s Office, Pulaski County EMS, and the Indiana Department of Transportation.
