DANVILLE, Ill. — Danville firefighters responded Wednesday evening to a fire that heavily damaged a vacant home on Martin Street.
The Danville Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 8:31 p.m. Sept. 23 to a reported structure fire at 1101 Martin Street. The property was listed as vacant and unsecured.
Firefighters arrived to find flames and heavy smoke coming from the rear of the wood-frame residence. Crews quickly deployed hose lines and began attacking the fire while other firefighters entered the building to search for anyone who might be inside.
The fire was located in a rear room and had extended into the attic. Firefighters encountered additional challenges when they discovered an addition had been constructed with a roof over the original structure, creating concealed spaces where the fire was able to spread. Crews opened those areas while continuing to extinguish the fire.
The fire was declared under control at approximately 9:35 p.m. Firefighters remained at the scene afterward to extinguish hot spots, complete overhaul and assist with the investigation.
The structure sustained an estimated $25,000 in property damage and $1,000 in contents loss. The incident report identifies the property as an abandoned residential structure.
No injuries are documented in the incident report.
The Danville Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Danville Police Department, AMT Ambulance, and Ameren Illinois.
A Danville Fire Department investigator examined the scene. The cause of the fire remains undetermined following the investigation.
