The Danville Fire Department makes October a month for the kids every year during Fire Prevention Week. A full week of school stops ended up at Meade Park Elementary on Friday (Oct 9th) morning, teaching some important firefighting skills to first and second graders.
Danville Deputy Fire Chief Chris McMahon says the entire fire department lives for the month of October; when they can share with the schoolchildren some very important information.

A TRIP THROUGH THE FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OBSTACLE COURSE
AUDIO: This is a time when we get to go and enter our community, and teach our kids the proper way to get out of their house if it’s on fire; teach them the safety, teach them the meeting place with their family. They get to meet Marshall. They get to see the fire trucks.

Students are able to see the fire trucks and equipment up close; go through an obstacle course that simulates what firefighters do during a fire and rescue mission; and go into the department’s “mobile simulation house trailer” that simulates fire safety in both the kitchen and bedroom.
Deputy Chief McMahan says Fire Prevention Week goes all through October for them; and they have many more school stops to make. He also knows they’ll be hearing more interesting questions.

AUDIO: Where’s it from? Is it hot in a fire? Is everything that we wear heavy? From all the stories we always hear too. We love the stories the kids give us. We’ve done several schools already, and we rotate through all the schools. It’s Fire Prevention MONTH for us; so (it’s) every October.
Deputy Chief Chris McMahon has been with the Danville Fire Department for 27 years.
