DANVILLE — With less than two weeks to the Nov. 3 election, voters had another chance to hear from candidates for Vermilion County sheriff and representative for the 104th Illinois House District.
The Danville NAACP Chapter hosted Thursday’s forum at Danville Area Community College.
Participating were sheriff candidates Republican John Thompson and Democrat Hugh Sands and state representative candidates incumbent Republican Brandun Schweizer and Democrat Mary Catherine Roberson. They are among the few contested local races.
Topics at Thursday night’s forum included guns and crime, mental-health services, jobs and businesses, the elimination of cash bail through the SAFE-T Act, the use of license-plate readers in investigations, food-stamp cuts, healthcare, data centers, minimum wage being adjusted for inflation, working across party lines, racial profiling and making sure the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System remains in Danville.
Thompson and Sands were asked what they think the biggest concern is for community members and how they’ll address it.
Thompson, a former Danville police commander, said it depends on what part of the county they’re in.
