THE FOLLOWING IS A NEWS-GAZETTE STORY BY JENNIFER BAILEY
DANVILLE — Schlarman Academy has a new interim principal.
Tracy Cherry, who retired in 2023 as principal of Danville High School after 33 years with the Danville district, will step into the role, outgoing Principal Barb Rew said.
Rew is stepping down as principal but will be staying at Schlarman.
“I didn’t retire from education. I miss being with the kids in the classroom, so I am returning to that setting,” she said. “I will remain with Schlarman Academy as a teacher and very excited and blessed to do so.”
Cherry has not yet taken the reins as school is still out for summer.
Cherry also is a member of Danville Area Community College Board of Trustees. Her educational career has spanned approximately 40 years.
She has said she has fond memories of every school she’s worked at, and what’s most important to her are the relationships with her students and staff.
In May, Schlarman, a pre-kindergarten-through-12th grade Catholic school in the Diocese of Peoria, announced its search for “a dynamic and visionary leader” to serve as principal beginning with the 2024-25 school year.
“Serving all of Vermilion County, Schlarman Academy has been a cornerstone of academic excellence and spiritual growth for generations, fostering a nurturing environment that promotes lifelong learning, continuous personal development and decision-making based upon the Gospel values,” Schlarman officials wrote. “As Schlarman Academy continues its tradition of providing a holistic education rooted in Catholic values, the search for a principal marks a pivotal moment in the school’s journey. The selected candidate will have the unique opportunity to shape the future of education, inspire a community, and lead with integrity, compassion and innovation.”
The ideal candidate must be a practicing Catholic and demonstrate a deep understanding and appreciation for Catholic education, possess exemplary leadership abilities, and exhibit a passion for fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment, officials said. Additionally, candidates should have at least a master’s degree, hold an Illinois Professional Educators’ License and have a proven track record of collaboration, strategic planning and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
The leadership change follows a rocky time last year with administration changes, a student walkout due to staff changes and a “Save Schlarman” meeting.
